These crochet squares are a little twist on the classic solid granny square!
They’re super easy to make, and when you’ve made a few, you can create all sorts of designs out of them! I’m currently in the process of re-writing these patterns, but you might to check out what I’ve done with these crochet squares in the past: Geometric Heart Cushion & Geometric Heart Square.
You can always mix it up and change up your second colour, like I’ve done here. It creates a cool design once you put a few together!
To get started, you’ll need:
– Yarn of your choice
To get the full effect of the square you’ll need 2 different colours.
I’ve used some of the following for my squares:
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Bubblegum Pink
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Mandarin orange
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Peach Orange
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Daffodil Yellow
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Buttercup Yellow
- Stylecraft Special DK* – Sunshine
- Stylecraft Special DK* – Spring Green
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Marine Blue

I recommend using a slightly smaller hook than what your yarn recommends- this will help prevent the second colour peeking through your stitches.
This pattern uses US terminology
– ch chain
– sp space
– rnd round
– slst slip stitch
– dc double crochet
Before you begin your crochet square…
Working with two colours at a time
I’ve used a method called ‘tapestry crochet’ in this square pattern. If you’re unfamiliar with this technique, it’s basically a way to use multiple colours within a project, whilst making as few ends as possible!
Joining second colour/ Switching colours
- Join your second colour by pulling the yarn through the loop on your hook (this will count as a chain 1 throughout this pattern).
- Repeat the same steps when switching colours. Drop and pick up your colour when required.
- Remember to carry the yarn that you’re not currently using throughout the square by crocheting over it as you go.
Pattern Notes:
- Try to keep your tension as consistent as possible to prevent the second colour peeking through your crochet squares.
- Keep both yarn attached at all times.
- In the step-by-step images, I’m using Light Pink for Colour 1 & Purple for Colour 2.
With Colour 1, start by making a magic circle (or ch 4 & slst join to make a loop):
RND 1: ch 5 {counts as dc + ch 2} , 3 dc, ch 1, join/switch to Colour 2 {colour changes also count as ch 1 throughout}, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1, switch to Colour 1, 2 dc, slst in 3rd ch of beginning ch 5.
[12 dc, 4 ch-2]
RND 2: slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 {counts as dc}, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 3 sts, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 2, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 3 sts, (2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 3 sts, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 1, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 3 sts, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
[28 dc, 4 ch-2]
RND 3: slst in next st, slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 {counts as dc}, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 7 sts, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 2, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 7 sts, (2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 7 sts, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 1, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 7 sts, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
[44 dc, 4 ch-2]
RND 4: slst in next st, slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 {counts as dc}, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 11 sts, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 2, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 11 sts, (2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 11 sts, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 1, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 11 sts, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
[60 dc, 4 ch-2]
Fasten off and weave in all ends. Block as desired.
If you’d like to make your square bigger, continue to add more rounds by repeating this pattern:
RND 5 onwards: slst in next st, slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 {counts as dc}, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each st, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 2, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each st, (2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each st, (2 dc + ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, switch to Colour 1, (2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each st, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
