Today I thought I’d share my favourite way to make a solid crochet granny square!

They’re very simple and once you’ve made the first few rounds, you’ll have the pattern repeat mastered- it’s that simple!
A small step at the beginning of each round means that the joins are almost seamless, too!

This pattern uses US terminology
– ch chain
– sp space
– rnd round
– slst slip stitch
– dc double crochet
Start by making a magic circle (or ch 4 & slst join to make a loop):
RND 1: ch 5 {counts as dc + ch 2}, *3 dc, ch 2* rep between * 3 times, 2 dc, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 5.
[12 dc, 4 ch-2]
RND 2: slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 {counts as dc throughout}, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 3 sts, *(2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 3 sts* rep between * 3 times, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
[28 dc, 4 ch-2]

RND 3: slst in next st, slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 7 sts, *(2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 7 sts* rep between * 3 times, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
[44 dc, 4 ch-2]
RND 4: slst in next st, slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 11 sts, *(2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of the next 11 sts* rep between * 3 times, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
[60 dc, 4 ch-2]
Fasten off and weave in all ends. Block as desired.

If you’d like to make your square bigger, continue to add more rounds by repeating this pattern:
RND 5 onwards: slst in next st, slst in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, dc in each st, *(2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each st* rep between * 3 times, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
These squares are made up of 6 rounds.
