Free crochet rainbow square pattern- Happy Granny Square Day 2019!

Happy Granny Square Day!

I LOVE granny squares.. absolutely love them!

I wanted to create an outrageously colourful and fun square to celebrate one of my favourite days on the crochet calendar year so I made this square!

crochet flower granny square pattern rainbow afghan modern

I’ve used a total of 13 different colours (all of which are in the flower centre) so there were many ends to sew in, but it’s a special occasion, right?!

I wrote down the pattern as I made it, so I thought I’d share it here. Unless you like sewing in ends, I don’t recommend following my colour choices haha! You can always use fewer colours – it’d be a great way to use up some scraps, too!

Due to time constraints, the pattern has had only had a couple of read throughs by me, so apologies in advance if there’s any mistakes! x Happy Granny Square day!

Flower centre

I’ve used 13 different colours for my flower!

Using Colour A, make a magic circle.
Rnd 1: ch 3 {counts as dc}, 11 dc in ring, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.
{12 dc}
Fasten off A.

Now for the petals:

Each petal is made by working (slst + ch 6 + trtr+ ch 6 + slst) into each st around (total of 12 petals).

In my square, I’ve made each petal using a different colour. If you’d also like to make it this way (be prepared for lots of ends!), start with colour B, then work your way through the rest of the colours in alphabetical order (see yarn list above for letter allocation).

Turning the flower into a square:

Rnd 1: {join colour A with a slst in any trtr. Skip all slsts & ch-6 sps}
ch 4, *slst in next trtr, ch 4** rep from * to ** 11 times, slst in initial slst.
{12 ch-4, 12 slst}
Do not fasten off.

Rnd 2: slst in next ch-4 sp, ch 3 {counts as dc}, (2 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc) in same ch-2 sp, *ch 1, (hdc + 2 sc) in next ch-4 sp, ch 1, (2 sc + hdc) in next ch-4 sp, ch 1, (3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc) in next ch-4 sp** rep from * to ** 4 times- omit (3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc) on final rep, slst in 3rd ch of initial ch 3.

Do not fasten off.

  1. I’m having trouble keeping the ‘petals’ straight, they seem to ‘spin’. Is there a trick to it?

  2. Great poncho. I would love to make this for my granddaughter. I get the granny square. Where is the rest of the pinch pattern?
