Free crochet stitch tutorial: The Sonic Stitch

Today I’m posting something a little different on the blog- a crochet stitch tutorial!

A couple of weeks ago I was playing around with some scrap yarn I had found after doing a bit of a tidy up of my yarn stash and came up with this textured stitch combo!

It kind of looks like sound waves so I’ve named it ‘The Sonic Stitch’! (I also really like using alliterations 😉)

I’d love to use this stitch to make a blanket- I think it’d work great! Perhaps it’s something I’ll do in the future, but for now I thought I’d just post the stitch repeat 🙂

You’ll need:

– Yarn of your choice 
I’ve used Aran weight/ 10 ply yarn in my swatch.

• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Paper White (601)
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Bubblegum Pink (451)
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran*  – Mandarin Orange (418)
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran*  – Buttercup Yellow (423)
• Rico Creative Cotton Aran* – Light Pistachio (44)
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran*  – Washed Teal (433) 
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran*  – Marine Blue (634)
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran*  – Pale Lilac (646)
• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran*  – Tea Rose (443)

– Corresponding crochet hook
I’ve used a 4.5mm hook.

– Yarn needle

– Scissors

This pattern uses US terminology

• WS wrong side
• RS right side
• rep repeat
• ch chain
• sc single crochet
• dc double crochet
• fptr front post treble crochet

Pattern notes:

• To create the stitch effect, I’ve used the same colour for all odd rounds- I refer to it as the ‘main colour’ in the pattern. I’m using Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in Paper White (601).
  
• The chains at the beginning of the rows do not count as sts.

Changing colours:

You’ll need to change colours after each row; this is done in the last stitch of the previous row.

To do this: pull your new yarn through the final 2 loops to complete the stitch.

Pattern:

Using your main colour (in my case paper white), chain any multiple of 4 (eg. 24, 36, 40, 76, 160, 220 etc)

Row 1: [RS] sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch along, switch to next colour.

Row 2: [WS] turn work, ch 2 {does not count as st throughout}

dc in same st, dc in each of the next 2 sts, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in each of the next 3 sts], rep between [ ] until end, switch to main colour.

Row 3: [RS] turn work, ch 1 {does not count as st throughout], sc in same st, sc in each of the next 2 sts, [dc in next skipped st two rows below*, sc in each of the next 3 sts], rep between [ ] until end, switch to next colour.

*work this dc in front of ch, not over. Skip ch 1.

Row 4: [WS] Repeat row 2

Row 5: [RS] turn work, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each of the next 2 sts, [fptr around st 2 rows below*, sc in each of the next 3 sts], rep between [ ] until end, switch to next colour.

*work this fptr in front of ch, not over. Skip ch 1.

Row 6: [WS] turn work, ch 2, dc in same st, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st], rep between [ ] until end, switch to main colour.

Row 7: [RS] turn work, ch 1, sc in same st, dc in next skipped st 2 rows below*, sc in next st, [fptr around next fptr two rows below*, sc in next st, dc in next skipped st two rows below*, sc in next st], rep between [ ] until end, switch to next colour.

*work this st in front of ch, not over. Skip ch 1.

Row 8: [WS] Repeat row 6

Row 9: [RS] turn work, ch 1, sc in same st, [fptr around st 2 rows below*, sc in next st] rep between [ ] until end, switch to next colour.

*work this st in front of ch, not over. Skip ch 1.

Row 10: Repeat row 2

Row 11: Repeat row 5

Row 12-13: Repeat rows 10 & 11

Row 14 onwards: Repeat rows 6-13 until you reach your desired size.

Weave in ends and you’re done! 🙂
