Free crochet floral square pattern- Picture Perfect Peony Square

Introducing my newest square design: the PICTURE PERFECT PEONY SQUARE!

This square is full of texture. I think it might be the most amount of stitches I’ve ever used in a single pattern!

I hope you like it!

I’ve also adapted the original square design into a hexagon! The pattern for this hexagon version will be coming soon!

Special stitches

Beginning puff stitch [beg ps]: ch 2, [yarn over, insert hook in sp and pull yarn through] rep 3 times, yarn over and pull through all but 2 loops. Yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.

Puff stitch [ps]: (yarn over, insert hook in sp and pull yarn through) rep 4 times, yarn over and pull through all but 2 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.

Beginning treble cluster [beg tr cluster]: ch 3, [yarn over twice, insert hook in sp and pull yarn through (yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times] rep 2 times, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Treble cluster [tr cluster] (also known as tr-3-tog / crochet three trebles together): [yarn over twice, insert hook in sp and pull yarn through (yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times] rep 3 times, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Folding single crochet [fsc]: As the name suggests, this stitch is basically a sc that is made over 2 rnds to create a folded texture. In this pattern, the folding single crochet sts are made in rnd 5 and worked through the back loops of the trebles made in rnd 4 and into the back loops of the corresponding rnd 3 sts below- another way you can look at it is you’ll be folding over the tr sts made in rnd 4 and using rnd 3 to keep it in place 🙂

  1. Insert hook into BL of next rnd 4 tr,
  2. and into the BL of the rnd 3 st directly below (the tr from step 1 will have been worked in the FL of this rnd 3 st)
  3. Yarn over and pull through both back loops,
  4. yarn over and pull though 2 loops.

NOTE: Take note of how many trebles were made in the FL of the rnd 3 st you are working into- while you’ll only need to make 1 st in each of the trebles from rnd 4, 2 fsc will be made in every other rnd 3 BL.

Loop Stitch: [LS] This is a stitch you’ll either love or hate! It might take a few tries before you get the hang of it, but I think it’s worth the effort for the texture it creates!

This stitch is always made on the wrong side of any project to ensure the loops show up on the right side.

Pattern notes:

– When front and back loops of stitches are referenced in the pattern, please note they are as viewed from the right side of the square. For example: Rnd 3 is made on the wrong side, so technically the front and back loops of these sts are the opposite when viewed from the front.

– The loop stitch can be a little bit tricky; if you’re finding it too difficult or would rather not use it, feel free to substitute the stitch with a single crochet instead. The centre of your flower will have a little less texture but structurally, the rest of your square will be fine!
