I often get asked what colours I use in my crochet projects, so today I’ve compiled a list of the colourways I most frequently use!
I know what you’re thinking, ‘Celine, you always use the same colours, how could you possibly make a whole blog post on that!?’ Great question, I thought the same thing! Surprisingly, there are so many shade variations and combinations within the 6 (yes, I know a rainbow has 7 colours) main colours that I was able to make this list of 5!
These colourways were put together based on their aesthetic – I’m not well-versed in the subject of colour theory, I thought they just looked pretty! 😛

I’ll start with my favourite (and most used) colourway! This combination is made up of a total of 12 colours, and although that may seem like a lot, all of the yarn I’ve used is acrylic which means it’s a relatively affordable colourway.
I love how the colours form a gradient- each colour blends into the next, avoiding any abrupt colour changes (I’m looking at you yarn cakes :P).
I’ve used these colours many times and they still are one of my favourites 🙂

This next colour combination, also made up of acrylic yarns, makes for a more vibrant rainbow.
I put these colours together when working on my first ever Mollie Makes magazine commission and have since fallen in love with them! I also used this colourway for my Rainbow pin cushion and in a square I designed for an upcoming collaboration (more on that soon!!).
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Bubblegum Pink (150)
- Stylecraft Special DK* – Lipstick (1246)
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* – Mandarin Orange (117)

The next colourway might be a little difficult to replicate for those of you that don’t have access to a Spotlight store.
This simple, bold combination of colours is mostly made up of 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – a 8ply cotton yarn exclusively available at Spotlight.
Although my favourite cotton yarn is by Paintbox yarns, the Flinders range is a great alternative for me as it’s affordable and locally available.
- 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – Chilli
- 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – Tangerine
- 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – Canary
- 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – Lime
- 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – Aqua / Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* – Washed Teal (433)
- 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton – Deep Purple
This next colour combination, also made up of cotton yarn, is one I like to use for a more light, bright and ‘springy’ look!
I first made this colourway for my Casual Granny CAL blanket by @crochetbyredagape and it’s quickly become one of my favourites- the colours make me so happy!
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* – Bubblegum Pink (451)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* – Mandarin Orange (418)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* – Buttercup Yellow (423)
- Rico Creative Cotton DK* – Colour Pistachio (016)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* – Washed Teal (433)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* – Tea Rose (443)
And finally, this last colour combination is more of an intense take on my first colourway and uses cotton yarn.
I’ve use Aran weight yarn here, but the great thing about the Paintbox yarns range is that they have a huge selection of colours across fibres and weights, so you could easily substitute the type of yarn, while keeping the same colours.
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Bubblegum Pink (651)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Tomato Red (613)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Blood Orange (620)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Buttercup Yellow (623)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Lime Green (629)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Washed Teal (633)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Marine Blue (634)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Colour Tea Rose (643)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* – Pale Lilac (646)
There are so many yarn brands and shades that I’ve yet to explore, so expect a follow up post(s) in the near future!
