Hugs and kisses (XOXO) or tic tac toe? How about both?! These squares are so much fun to make and take no time at all!
I really would love to make a ‘Hugs and Kisses’ throw using these squares in the near future! I’ll be sure to make a blog post when I finally get around to doing that π

Kiss/ ‘X’ Square
A few notes before you begin:
- For some reason I’ve found this square quite difficult to explain in words, so I’ve tried to provide as many photos and charts to demonstrate the steps.
- As you work round 1 you’ll probably notice your work will curl. The next few rounds will help minimise that but unfortunately due to the way this square is worked, I’ve been unable to work out a way to get it to lie completely flat. Blocking your square will help with this issue.
Kiss/ ‘X’ motif

Motif
Centre of βXβ
Row 1: Ch 6, 1 SC in 2nd ch from hook, 1 SC in each of the next 4 ch [5 sts]
Row 2-15: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as st), 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts.
Fasten off and turn your strip 90 degrees clockwise.
Turn your strip 90 degrees clockwise.
Points of βXβ
Iβve found it a little difficult to explain this part, so if youβre unable to completely understand what Iβm trying to say, please refer to the chart and image below.
Row 1: Attach colour B with a slst into one side of row 6.
ch 1 (does not count as st), 1 SC into the sides of the next 5 rows (you should have sts in rows 6-10 and have 5 rows remaining on either side).
Row 2-5: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as st), 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts.
Fasten off COLOUR B
Repeat on other side of centre piece.

Now to start making it into a square!
Attach colour A with a slst into the 2nd SC to the right in the top right hand corner of your motif. I realise that this may sound a bit confusing, so please refer to the diagram below for clarity.

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 TR), *1 DC in next st, 1 HDC in next st, 1 SC in next st, now working into the sides of the rows: 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 DC in next st, 1 TR in next st, 1 TR3TOG across next st, into the sp between and into the following st, 1 TR in next st, 1 DC in next st, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts, now working back into the top of the sts: 1 DC in next st, 1 TR in next st** repeat from * to ** 4 times- omit last TR on final repeat, slst into 4th ch of initial ch 4 [56 sts]

Round 2: Slst into next st, ch1 (does not count as st), *(2 HDC, ch 2, 2 HDC) in next st, 1 HDC in each of the next 13 sts** repeat from * to ** 4 times, slst into initial HDC [68 sts, 4x ch 2 spaces]
Note: (2 HDC, ch 2, 2 HDC) will always be made in the DC to the left of any TR.

Round 3: Slst into next st and ch-space,
ch 1 (does not count as st), *(1 SC, ch 2, 1 SC) in ch-space, 1 SC in each of the next 17 sts** repeat from * to ** 4 times, slst into initial SC [76 sts, 4x ch 2 spaces]
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Block well.

Hug/ ‘O’ Square – This one is much more straight forward π

Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st), 2 SC in each st around, slst into initial SC [24 sts]

Fasten off COLOUR A
Round 3: Attach colour B with a slst into any st.

Round 4: Ch 1 (does not count as st), *2 HDC in next st, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts ** repeat from * to ** 12 times, slst into initial HDC [48 sts]
Fasten off COLOUR B

Round 5: Attach colour A with a slst into any st.
Ch 5 (counts as 1 TR, ch 1), 1 TR in same st, *1 DC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 DC in each of the next 2 sts, (1 TR, ch 1, 1 TR) in next st** repeat from * to ** 4 times β omit (1 TR, ch 1, 1 TR ) on final repeat, slst into 4th ch of initial ch 5 [52 sts, 4x ch 1 spaces]

Round 6: Slst into next ch-space, ch 1 (does not count as st),*(2 HDC, ch 2, 2 HDC) in ch-space, 1 HDC in each of the next 13 sts** repeat from* to ** 4 times, slst into initial HDC [68 sts, 4x ch 2 spaces]

Round 7: Slst in next st and ch-space, ch 1 (does not count as st), *(1 SC, ch 2, 1 SC) in ch-space, 1 SC in each of the next 17 sts** repeat from * to ** 4 times, slst into initial SC [76 sts, 4x ch 2 spaces]
