I’m all about the puff stitch this month! I love the texture it gives to the simplest of designs!
In this post I’ll be showing you how to make this one!
I love how the rainbow puffs peek through the corners of the hexagon!

What you’ll need:
– Any DK/8ply yarn
I’ve used Spotlight’s 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton 8 Ply Yarn in colours: Snow (A), Deep purple (B), Aqua (C), Lime (D), Canary (E), Tangerine (F) and Dark red (G).
Alternatively, you could also use this rainbow colourway (currently my favourite combination):
Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK* in colours: Paper White (A), Tea Rose (B), Washed Teal (C), Lime Green (D), Buttercup Yellow (E), Mandarin Orange (F), Bubblegum Pink (G).
– 3mm crochet hook
I’ve used a 3mm hook to avoid the second yarn peeking through stitches- the only down size to this is that it creates a stiff hexagon. If you aren’t bothered by the yarn showing or intend to cut and rejoin your yarn at each colour change (all the ends!!!), I’d highly recommend a larger hook (3.5 or 4mm).
If you’re unfamiliar with working with two colours at a time/ tapestry crochet, I suggest you check this great resource out!

Final Size: 18cm x 11 cm
Special stitches:
Puff stitch:
(Yarn over, insert hook into chain 2 space and pull yarn through) Repeat 4 times.
Yarn over and pull through 8 loops.
Yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.
Beginning Puff Stitch:
There are two ways you can do a Beginning Puff Stitch. I prefer to start my rounds with the ‘standing’ puff stitch, but most people use the chain 3 start- either one is fine 🙂
‘Standing’ Puff Stitch
Pull loop on hook up to roughly the height of a double crochet stitch.
(Yarn over, insert hook into chain 2 space and pull yarn through) Repeat 4 times.
Yarn over and pull through all but 2 loops.
Yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
‘Chain 3 Start’ Puff Stitch
Chain 3, (Yarn over, insert hook into chain 2 space and pull yarn through) Repeat 3 times.
Yarn over and pull through all but 2 loops.
Yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Joining a new colour
At the beginning of Rounds 2-7 you will need to join a new colour.
To do this:
Switching between colours in a round
To change colours before a puff stitch
To change colours after a puff stitch:
Pattern notes- please read before you start!
- First puff stitch of each round is a beginning puff stitch. I haven’t specified that in the written pattern to keep the repeats simple.
- I’ve indicated the colour being used by the colour of the text. The black font is Colour A (white/snow), which you use in all 8 rounds.
- Keep Colour A attached at all times- when joining a new colour, drop A and pick it up once again when you need to use it.
- Make the final DC of each round in the slip stitch made in the first puff stitch from the previous round.
- If you find your work curling too much, go up a hook size.
- Try to keep your tension as consistent as possible to prevent the second yarn peeking through stitches.
