Happy New Year!
While I’m not really one for resolutions, one thing I want to do this year is sort out my yarn storage!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found random bits of yarn around the house!
Last night I was determined to start taking control of those left over little bits of yarn and searched the web for a small crochet basket pattern that I could keep on my desk.
Although I found quite a few patterns, nothing really stood out- so I came up with this!
I was after a bowl type shape, slowly widening as you reach the top- I think it turned out okay!
I didn’t have any t-shirt yarn on hand so I decided to improvise by using 6 strands of dk weight cotton at once (a technique I learnt from making my lottieandalbert rainbow blanket!)
You will want to make sure the yarn/s you use are sturdy enough to keep the shape of the piece.

You will need:
- 6x 50g DK weight cotton yarn
I’ve used a mixture of Lincraft and Spotlight brand cotton yarn. - 10 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Final dimensions: Diameter: 15cm Depth: 6.5cm
NOTES:
- Pattern is written in
- Hold all 6 strands of yarn like you would with just one. Make sure you always have all 6 colours on your hook- it’s easy to accidentally miss a strand while you crochet!
- Like working with t-shirt yarn, using multiple strands of yarn at once can be difficult to work with. At times I found it difficult to put my hook into a stitch- you’ll definitely need to use those arm muscles!
- I had plenty of yarn left over after making this small bowl/basket! You could definitely make it a lot larger with the 6 skeins.
- Unless otherwise specified, stitches are to be worked into both loops.
PATTERN:
Working into a magic circle,
R1: Chain 1 (this will not count as a stitch throughout), work 6 SC into circle
Slip stitch into first SC (6 SC)
R2: Chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first SC (12 SC)
R3: Chain 1, *2 SC in next stitch, 1 SC in next stitch* Repeat * to * 6 times
Slip stitch into first SC (18 SC)
R4: Chain 1, *1 SC in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 SC in next stitch*
Repeat * to * 6 times
Slip stitch into the BACK LOOP of first SC (24 SC)
R5: WORK THIS ROUND IN BACK LOOPS ONLY
Chain 1, 1 SC in each stitch
Slip stitch into both loops of first SC (24 SC)
R6: Chain 1, 1 SC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first SC (24 SC)
R7: Chain 1, *2 SC in next stitch, 1 SC in each of
the next 3 stitches*
Repeat * to * 6 times
Slip stitch into first SC (30 SC)
R8-9: Repeat R6 (30 SC)
If you’d like a larger bowl, repeat rounds 7-9, increasing the number of SC by 6 in round 7 each time the round is repeated. i.e.(2sc),4sc / (2sc),5sc etc.
OPTIONAL: Slip stitch in each stitch to finish off.
Weave in all ends.
