What happen when my rainbow obsessed self happens to stumble across a yarn sale too good to resist?
A giant rainbow cushion, of course!
One day, as I was perusing the isles of Spotlight (as I often do), this vibrant super chunky yarn (and its 40% off tag) caught my eye!
After experimenting with a few different ideas, I finally was able to come up with this super simple design!
If you can’t get your hands on Moda Vera Monkey Yarn, here are some suitable yarn substitutions:
Acrylic: Lion Brand Hometown USA
Cotton: Rico Design Fashion Summer

YOU WILL NEED:
Moda Vera Monkey Yarn in colours: – 8mm crochet hook
– 1x Red – Tapestry Needle
– 1x Orange – Pom Pom maker
– 1x Yellow – Polyester filling
– 1x Lime – Scissors
– 1x Turquoise – Fabric for lining
– 1x Purple
– 1x White
NOTES
Changing colours:
- Rather than ending the final round of a colour with a slip stitch, I prefer to use the invisible join method to fasten off.
I then like to join the next colour using a standing stitch. Alternatively, you can end with a slip stitch and join like you normally would, chaining one before you continue the round.
- To close, I use the ‘Pull through loop’ method using half double crochet stitches. If you’re unfamiliar with this method , be sure to check out
this great tutorial.
- BLO: Stitch is to be worked into back loop only.
Working into a magic circle,
R1: USING COLOUR A
Chain 1 (this will not count as a stitch throughout), work 14 HDC into circle.
Slip stitch into first HDC (14 HDC)
R2: Chain 1, 2 HDC in each stitch (28 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR A
R3: USING COLOUR B and working in BLO
HDC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first HDC (28 HDC)
R4: Chain 1, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next stitch * Repeat * to * 14 times
Slip stitch into first HDC (42 HDC)
R5: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch (42 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR B
R6: USING COLOUR C and working in BLO
*2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next stitch* Repeat * to * 21 times
Slip stitch into first HDC (63 HDC)
R7: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first HDC (63 HDC)
R8: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch (63 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR C
R9: USING COLOUR D and working in BLO
*2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches* Repeat * to * 21 times
Slip stitch into first HDC (84 HDC)
R10: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first HDC (84 HDC)
R11: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch (84 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR D
R12: USING COLOUR E and working in BLO
*2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 3 stitches* Repeat * to * 21 times
Slip stitch into first HDC (105 HDC)
R13: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first HDC (105 HDC)
R14: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch (105 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR E
R15: USING COLOUR F and working in BLO
*2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 4 stitches* Repeat * to * 21 times
Slip stitch into first HDC (126 HDC)
R16: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first HDC (126 HDC)
R17: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch (126 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR F
R18: USING COLOUR G and working in BLO
*2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 5 stitches* Repeat * to * 21 times
Slip stitch into first HDC (147 HDC)
R19: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch
Slip stitch into first HDC (147 HDC)
R20: Chain 1, HDC in each stitch (147 HDC)
Fasten off COLOUR G
R21: USING COLOUR A and working in BLO
SC in each stitch
You may want to add an additional SC in one of the stitches (one stitch will have 2 SC) to make the stitch count 148 – This will make joining a little easier later on. (147/148)
Fasten off COLOUR A
Weave in ends.
Circle has a diameter of 60cm.
OPTIONAL: Line the back of your piece.
This will prevent polyfil stuffing from poking out of gaps that the stitches may create.
Cut your fabric (I used an old bed sheet) into a circle slightly smaller than your crochet piece and pin it into place .
Using a wip stitch, work your way around the circle, sewing through both the fabric and back of each stitch.
Fold circle in half and line up stitches of round 21 on both sides of semi circle. (74 SC on each side)
Join both sides of round 21 together. I use the ‘Pull through loop’ method using half double crochet stitches. If you’re unfamiliar with this method , be sure to check out this great tutorial.
Firmly stuff with Polyfil as you join.
You now have a rainbow cushion!
To add more definition, add a line of SC along the bottom centre of your folded circle (40 SC).
Don’t forget to add some pom poms for clouds!
