Rainbow Geometric Heart Square

I’ve received so much love for this heart design over on Instagram, that I’ve decided to make a special blog post about it!

This design is actually a smaller version of my Geometric Heart Cushion I made a few months ago- only rainbowfied!

Paintbox Yarns Simply DK* in colours:

This heart design is made up of 16 squares.

To start you’ll need to make:

Each square should measure 4.5 x 4.5 cm.

ONE COLOUR SQUARE

Chain 5, *3 dc, chain 2* 3 times.

Work an additional 2 dc into the magic circle.

Slip stitch into 3rd chain of beginning chain 5.

ROUND 2: Chain 3, (2 dc ch2, 2dc) into chain 2 space.

*3 dc into the next 3 dc from the previous row, (2 dc ch2, 2 dc) into chain 2 space*  3 times

Work 2 dc in remaining 2 dc from the previous row.

Slip stitch in beginning chain 3.

TWO COLOUR SQUARE

For this square you will be using two colours – I choose to cut and rejoin the yarn each time there is a colour change (yes, ends!!). Alternatively, you may choose to carry the yarn behind your square.

ROUND 1: Using Colour A make a magic ring.

Chain 5, 3 dc, chain 1.

Cut Colour A.

Join Colour B (joining yarn will count as a chain 1 throughout)

3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc, chain 1 into the magic circle.

Cut Colour B.

Join Colour A.

Work 2 dc into the magic circle.

Slip stitch into 3rd chain of beginning chain 5.

ROUND 2: Using Colour A

Chain 3, (2 dc ch2, 2 dc) into chain 2 space.

3 dc into the next 3 dc from the previous row, (2 dc chain 1) into chain 2 space.

Cut Colour A.

Join Colour B.

Work 2 dc in same chain 2 space.

3 dc into the next 3 dc from the previous row.

(2 dc ch2, 2 dc) into chain 2 space.

3 dc into the next 3 dc from the previous row.

(2 dc chain 1) into chain 2 space.

Cut Colour B.

Join Colour A

Work 2 dc in same chain 2 space.

Work 2 dc in remaining 2 dc from the previous row.

Slip stitch in beginning chain 3.

Once you have all your squares made, you’ll need to join them in the configuration below.

There are a few ways that you can join your squares – for this design I used the invisible join method (there are many great tutorials out there on the web if you’re unsure!).

Don’t forget to sew in your ends!

And there you go! You now have a heart piece ready to be turned into something great!

To make your piece bigger, DC around the entire piece, working 2dc in each chain 2 space along the sides and (2dc ch2, 2dc) into the four corners.

You may even decide to continue to add squares to your piece!

I plan to make a cushion cover and intend to combine these two methods to make a square large enough to cover a 45cm x 45cm (18″ x18″) square cushion insert.
