Nothing is better than the humble granny square and to discover that I could do so much more with them was a real treat!
The possibilities are endless- I’m still coming up with new designs as I write this post!
I was blown away by the response to these squares when I shared my experimenting on Instagram last week- it seems like you all loved them too!
Here’s a little explanation on how to make this square below! It needs a cool name though- any suggestions?

Before we start, here are some things to note:
- This square uses two colours. I’ll refer to them as Colours A and B in this post. Colours used in example are Stylecraft SDK in colours: Magenta and Aspen.
- There are many colour changes in this square. Here’s a great post on how to do that!
- You may want to cut and rejoin the yarn each time there is a colour change (yes, ends!!). Alternatively, you may choose to carry the yarn behind your square.
For those of you who are familiar with a granny square, here’s a picture tutorial for you to follow!
I even *attempted* to make a chart! I’m not completely sure it’s correct- if you do decide to follow it, do so at your own peril! 😆
Now for the written instructions!
Round 1: Using Colour A make a magic ring.
Chain 3, 2dc, chain 2, *3dc chain 2* 3 times
Slip stitch to beginning chain 3 and fasten off.
Round 2: Join Colour B in any chain 2 space.
Chain 3 and work (2dc, chain 2, 3dc) into the same chain 2 space.
Repeat *3dc chain 2 3dc* in each of the remaining 3 chain 2 spaces.
Slip stitch to beginning chain 3 and fasten off.
Round 3: Join Colour A in any chain 2 space.
Chain 3 and work (2dc, chain 2, 3dc) into the same chain 2 space.
*Switch to Colour B and 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.
Switch to Colour A work (3dc chain 2 3dc) into chain 2 space*
Repeat ** 3 times. Switch to Colour B and work 3dc in last space.
Slip stitch to beginning chain 3 and fasten off.
Round 4: Join Colour B in any chain 2 space.
Chain 3 and work (2dc, chain 2, 3dc) into the same chain 2 space.
*(Switch to Colour A and work 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.) 2 times
Switch to Colour B and work (3dc chain 2 3dc) into chain 2 space*
Repeat ** 3 times. Switch to Colour A and work 3dc in each of the remaining 2 spaces.
Slip stitch to beginning chain 3 and fasten off.
Round 5: Join Colour A in any chain 2 space.
Chain 3 and work (2dc, chain 2, 3dc) into the same chain 2 space.
*Switch to Colour B and work 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.
Switch to Colour A and work 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.
Switch to Colour B and work 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.
Switch to Colour A and work (3dc chain 2 3dc) into chain 2 space*
Repeat ** 3 times.
Switch to Colour B and work 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.
Switch to Colour A and work 3dc in space between the two groups of 3dc from the previous row.
Switch to Colour B and work 3dc in remaining space.
Slip stitch to beginning chain 3 and fasten off.
Hopefully you’ve managed to create a square using my instructions! If you decided to cut and rejoin your yarn at each colour change, now is the time to weave in those pesky ends!!
My plan is to eventually create a blanket using this square! Thanks to technology, I was able to generate what that might just look like!
I love how they create a diamond when joined!

I like this pattern, very colorful. have you named your square yet? it makes me think of the swirls in a marble, so I saved a copy and called it ..’Marbles Squared’. I look forward to having fun with color, thanks for sharing it.

Hello just finished the one you title Modern granny square and loved it. I made it in red and blue and carried the yarn….thank you for the pattern…Now my next question is do you have a pattern for your c2c square( or at least looks like C2C but not at the same time) in the picture above the one with all 4 colors in it. Very cool pattern! Fun to make and good instructions. I wish I didnt have to weave in all the ends now. Love the look of the blanket using them
