Crochet: Geometric Heart Cushion

As you may have seen on Instagram this week, I finally finished making my Geometric Heart Cushion!

I’ve been asked by a few people to share how I made it, and because I’m not too experienced in pattern writing, consider this an explanation, rather than a pattern.

THIS DESIGN USES US CROCHET TERMS

Supplies used:

This heart design is made up of 16 squares.

To start you’ll need to make:

  • 8 Two colour squares
  • 2 squares of colour 1
  • 6 squares of colour 2

                                                           Refer to the image below

Once you have all your squares made, you’ll need to join them in the configuration below.Screen Shot 2017-05-17 at 10.44.15 pmThere are a few ways that you can join your squares – for this design I used the back loop slip stitch method (there are many great tutorials out there on the web if you’re unsure!).

Once all 16 squares are joined, DC around the entire piece, working 2dc in each chain 2 space along the sides and (2dc ch2, 2dc) into the four corners.

Now to work the back of the cushion!

The back piece is super simple- it’s just one continuous solid granny square!

Following the ‘one colour’ square on page one, continue to add additional rounds until your piece reaches the same size as your front piece.

I have stopped after completing 18 rounds for a stitch count of 284 DC.

Before you join the two squares together, SC around the front piece, (3 SC) in the corners.

When it comes to the back piece, starting in any chain 2 corner, *3SC in chain 2 space, (1 SC in the next 13 stitches, 2SC in next stitch) 5 times, 1 SC in next stitch* Repeat 4 times.

These single crochet stitches will be used to join the pieces together in the next step!

Now to join!

Once again using the ‘back loop slip stitch’ method, join the front and back pieces wrong sides together! Once the third side is completed, insert the cushion and continue to join the opening closed.

And you’re done!
